These types of scams are not new and the world is and always be full of grifters.  Where this Chronicle article went wrong is to try and put the responsibility on Craigslist.  Fact is people need to be cautious when buying and selling anything from strangers, online or off.  If some asks you to meet them in the parking lot of an abandoned Target store, that should send up a red flag.  The moral of the story.
